Archives Partners Fund

The ACL & SAL HS has established the Archives Partners Fund to strengthen care of the Society’s existing archival materials, secure new acquisitions, and improve our archive space. This space is currently in the ex-ACL station and office building in downtown Rocky Mount, N.C., and was established in 2001 as part of the station’s renovation that took place after CSX transferred ownership to the City of Rocky Mount. With funding and support from the NC DOT Rail Division, the renovation included space for the Rocky Mount Amtrak station plus city offices and nonprofit groups.

This funding will address a number of long-standing needs at the archives:

  • Space improvements – to allow better workspace for volunteers and for better shelving and storage

  • Purchase of archival storage materials – such as file folders, boxes, and photo sleeves to prevent deterioration of paper documents and photographic images

  • Sorting, cataloguing, and scanning of existing holdings – focusing on our collections of photographs, maps, track diagrams, equipment diagrams and drawings, annual reports, advertising materials, and abandonment files among others, to make these more accessible to members and the public

  • Development of online access – to our holdings, focusing on scanned images and associated databases

  • Acquisition of new historical items – particularly those now rapidly becoming available from older individual collectors
