<image:caption>ACL piggyback train No. 175 is racing through South Dunn, North Carolina, on June 20, 1965. While ACL had a number of high-horsepower B-B and C-C units on the roster by then that were often assigned to the piggyback fleet, F units could still be found on these high-priority trains. The train is coming under one of ACL’s cantilever signal bridges, part of the extensive installation of new signaling made during Coast Line’s modernization program in the years after World War II. The signal bridges and their target signals, long a symbol of the “A-line,” have now been replaced by modern Safetran signals. —Warren Calloway photo</image:caption>

<image:caption>Atlantic Coast Line caboose 0381 provides a classic ending to a northbound freight near Dunn, North Carolina, on ACL’s main line. The 1965 scene was a familiar one for many decades, but by this date Coast Line’s new orange steel cabooses were already being turned out by the Waycross shops and would soon replace their bright red wood predecessors. No. 0381 was one of several hundred similar cars that were built in the 1920s; this example shows the plywood sides that had replaced the original wood sheathing on most of them by the early 1960s. —Warren Calloway photo</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dwarfing the refrigerator cars behind it, Seaboard 4500 leads an extra southbound freight at Southern Pines, North Carolina, in 1946, not long after its delivery in December 1945. The 91-foot, 585,000-pound locomotive was a Baldwin model DR12-8-3000, riding on 16 drivers plus unpowered four-wheel trucks at each end. The behemoth came with a steam generator for passenger trains but was quickly moved to freight service. It was joined by 13 roster mates in 1947 and 1948, but the locomotives soon developed a reputation for troublesome operation. They were retired or stored beginning in 1957, and all were off the roster by 1960. —Baldwin photo, Warren Calloway collection, colorized by Tom Alderman</image:caption>

By this date, the Champion ran only to Florida’s west coast; before the April 1968 timetable change, the famous ex-ACL train served both coasts. The train is still hefty enough to warrant three E units and a long string of lightweight cars, linked by two express cars. <image:caption>The Seaboard Coast Line merged the Piedmont & Northern, a short but busy line with separate segments in North and South Carolina, in 1969. Among the P&N’s assets was a roster of Alco road switchers, dominated by a group of RS3s that fit in nicely with the many such units SCL inherited from the Seaboard. One ex-P&N unit, No. 1257, poses on a sunny Florida day (perhaps at Dunnellon, Florida) in the early 1970s with a class M-6 caboose rebuilt from a Seaboard caboose.
